It looked as if an airplane was racing on four wheels on the streets of Czechoslovakia, a country created in the wake of WWI in 1919. The car was named after the Tatra Mountains located on the then Czechoslovak-Polish border. The name Tatraplan referred to the shape and streamlining inspired by aircraft — at the same time, it celebrated the Communist planned economy. Manufactured from 1947 to 1952, a total of 6,342 Tatra 600s rolled off the production line. The model won the 2010 UK ‘Classic Car of the Year’ competition in the 1940s category.

The factory was founded in 1850 but was called Tatra only from 1919.
In World War II, the plant manufactured tank engines and trucks for the German military. After 1999, they stopped producing automobiles and only manufactured trucks with considerable success in the market. With a Tatra truck, six-time Dakar Rally winner Karel Loprais, nicknamed Monsieur Dakar by the media, successfully completed the mission many times.
